This week, as part of National Nurses Week, we asked our nurses to reflect on their careers and share “Why I would choose nursing all over again…”  The responses are a testament to the caregiving nature that led them into this very special profession, and even more remarkable given what they have endured this past year.

Here’s just one example of what we heard:

“I would choose nursing all over again because it has been a fulfillment of my life’s dream to help, love, and nurture people.  I have always wanted to do this just like my mother, her mother, and her mother’s mother. Four generations of nurses – and now my girls are following in our footsteps.”
Jazmin Britt (Philadelphia)

After reading responses, our Chief Nurse Executive recalled the oath that nurses take during pinning and graduation ceremonies. It’s called the Nightingale Pledge, named in honor of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing – and also our namesake. Since its inception over 100 years ago, the words reflect a moral and ethical commitment that nurses bring to their work, and a vow to always protect the best interest and safety of anyone in their care.

Before God and those assembled here, I solemnly pledge;
To adhere to the code of ethics of the nursing profession;
To co-operate faithfully with the other members of the nursing team and to carryout faithfully and to the best of my ability the instructions of the physician or the nurse who may be assigned to supervise my work;
I will not do anything evil or malicious and I will not knowingly give any harmful drug or assist in malpractice.
I will not reveal any confidential information that may come to my knowledge in the course of my work.
And I pledge myself to do all in my power to raise the standards and prestige of practical nursing;
May my life be devoted to service and to the high ideals of the nursing profession.

To all nurses, we thank you for all that you do, and are so grateful for your pledge and your service!
